To talk about the Arencibia place is, for most Gran Canarians, to talk about nostalgia, about an exciting childhood when we entered the store with our mothers and saw the multitude of fabrics, clothes, fabrics, curtains... which, in the eyes of a child, was like seeing a sea of different colors and new smells. Going up to the top floor, by its huge stairs and leaning on the handrails of magnificent wood, took us years ago, where good taste and elegance were supposed and, if you added to this, the huge counters that covered the walls, for a child, it was like being inside a castle. I have to say that more than one child was carried away by his adventurous instinct and got lost, in the midst of mischievous laughter, by the dense coat racks that crowded the main floor. We are talking about a piece of history of Triana Street, more specifically number 66, the Arencibia premises, which was founded in this same place in 1933 by Don Pedro Arencibia Báez, an illustrious merchant, until it closed its doors in 2020, leaving Triana Street without one more of its flagship premises. To say Arencibia, for many, is to see our grandmothers and mothers again, going to buy cloths, fabrics or whatever was needed, it was always well stocked and what was not found in Arencibia, possibly, you would not find in any other store. There are several generations that have passed through the store, and each and every one of them remembers this place with affection and emotion. What matters least now are its three diaphanous floors, each with four hundred square meters, the basement, perfectly suitable for a garage. Nor is it important that the premises face both Triana Street and Francisco Gourié Street, nor that thanks to its generous dimensions it can accommodate almost any business that is located here. What really matters is that the business that is established here must know that it has a responsibility, which is none other than to mark the soul of the Gran Canarians who step on it, almost, almost, until it becomes immortal.
