On August 21, 1808, the Anglo-Portuguese forces - commanded by Wellesley, future Count of Vimeiro - defeated the Napoleonic troops, commanded by General Junot, putting an end to the First French Invasion in the so-called Peninsular War.As part of the grandiose commemorations of the First Centenary of the Battle of Vimeiro, an evocative obelisk was erected under the patronage of the last King of Portugal, King Manuel II, who presided over the commemorations and the inauguration of the obelisk on his first official visit.The commemorative obelisk was listed as a Property of Public Interest in 1982.As part of the Bicentenary celebrations, the Interpretation Center for the Battle of Vimeiro was inaugurated, with two exhibition spaces, a library and a multipurpose amphitheatre. Historical reconstructions of the Battle are being carried out in the adjoining grounds.The local toponymy is full of influences from the Battle, as are the names given to rural buildings in the oldest land registers.Come and visit!
