However, the municipality's origins date back to earlier times, namely to the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods, of which traces have been found.
The Romans were also present in the municipality, as evidenced by a Roman road - which linked São Brás to Ossonoba (Estói) and Pax Júlia (Beja) - and a funerary inscription from the 2nd century d. C. - discovered on the pulpit plinth of an ancient hermitage, which gave rise to the Church of S. Romão.
The discovery of two ancient graves, where some bones and a jug were found, proves the presence of the Visigoths during the 5th century d. Ç.
The names of localities such as Almargens, Alcaria, Alportel and Mesquita, as well as some coins, mark the passage of the Arabs through the county.
