After this episode, D. Leonor ordered the construction of a hospital in that place, and the works were started the following year a small village was also installed, and arrangements were made for it to prosper and evolve. The hospital was named Nossa Senhora do Pópulo, as it had been built to support the people. It was from this nucleus that the city was born and developed.

Sabia que… aquando da morte de D. Afonso V, ao deslocar-se de Óbidos para Batalha, onde iriam realizar-se as cerimónias fúnebres do rei, D. Leonor, esposa de D. João II de Portugal, e a sua corte passaram por um grupo de pessoas do povo que se banhavam em águas enlameadas e quentes. Curiosa, a rainha ordenou que se parasse a carruagem e indagou aos banhistas o porquê de tal aglomerado. Após a resposta de que estas eram águas curativas, a rainha quis experimentar os seus efeitos, pois ela própria sofria de um mal, e pôde comprovar que, de facto, estas águas curavam mesmo. O concelho foi assim batizado de Caldas da Rainha em sua honra.
Após este episódio, D. Leonor mandou construir naquele local um hospital, e as obras foram iniciadas no ano seguinte foi também instalada uma pequena povoação, e foram tomadas providências para que esta prosperasse e evoluísse. O hospital foi batizado de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo, pois havia sido construído para apoio ao povo. Foi a partir deste núcleo que nasceu e se desenvolveu a cidade.
