The fortress was of greatimportance during the Russo-Turkish wars in the period 1853-1856;1877-1878. The legend has it that 300 Bulgarian craftsmen were hiredto build the facility. After the construction was completed thecraftsmen were banished in Turkey, far away from their homes and thearchitect who designed it was hanged in Tzarigrad in an attempt tokeep the secrets of the fortress. Nowadays the construction isinhabited by a local citizen who takes care of it, looks after themuseum collection and guides tourists around the facility.One of the most intriguing landmarks of Silistra is the Roman Tombdated back to the 4th century AD. It is unique for its exquisitemurals which have no equivalent in Bulgaria. The total area of the reserve is approximately 600hectares and the buffer zone is 540 hectares. The depth of the lakevaries from 1 to 3 m .
