The city of Alcobaça has, in its urban perimeter, a population of approximately 18,000 inhabitants, although in the municipality, according to the Census carried out in 2011, there are about 55,000 people. Alcobaça is located 92 km north of Lisbon (access via A8, or via IC2/A1), and 114 km from Coimbra (via A8/A17/IC8/A1), it is bordered to the north by the municipality of Marinha Grande, to the east by the city of Leiria, Porto de Mós and Rio Maior, to the southwest by Caldas da Rainha and to the west by the village of Nazaré.
The municipality of Alcobaça is polycentric, having, in addition to the city of Alcobaça, the villages of Benedita, São Martinho do Porto, Alfeizerão Cela and Pataias.
The city of Alcobaça is bathed by the rivers Alcoa and Baça, from whose agglutination derives its name.
Among its many historical and cultural attractions, the Monastery of Alcobaça stands out for its position around which the village developed, from the 15th century onwards. The monastery was founded by D. Afonso Henriques in 1148 and completed in 1222.
The monastery of Alcobaça was classified by UNESCO in 1989 as a World Heritage Site.
