ALCOBAÇA was considered by the Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection (DECO) as one of the Portuguese cities with the highest quality of life, a classification based on parameters such as the balanced cost of housing, compared to other national district capitals, the cost of living, the good conditions of the labour market or waste management.
The city of Alcobaça has, in its urban perimeter, a population of approximately 18,000 inhabitants, although in the municipality, according to the Census carried out in 2011, there are about 55,000 people. Among its many historical and cultural attractions, the Monastery of Alcobaça stands out for its position around which the village developed, from the 15th century onwards. The monastery was founded by D. Afonso Henriques in 1148 and completed in 1222.
The monastery of Alcobaça was classified by UNESCO in 1989 as a World Heritage Site.
